You Are Not Alone: Suicide Prevention Awareness at Unwind Your Mind Psychiatry & Wellness
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and at Unwind Your Mind Psychiatry & Wellness in Yukon, OK, we believe that talking openly about mental health — including the hardest conversations — is one of the most powerful things we can do for our community. Awareness saves lives. And you deserve to know that help is always within reach.
Breaking the Silence Around Suicide
For too long, suicide has been surrounded by stigma and silence — which makes it harder for people in pain to ask for help. The truth is that suicidal thoughts are a symptom of overwhelming emotional pain, not a character flaw or a sign of weakness. Many people experience these thoughts at some point in their lives, and many of them go on to recover and thrive.
Talking about suicide does not plant the idea — it opens a door. When someone feels safe enough to say "I'm struggling," that conversation can be the beginning of healing.
Warning Signs to Watch For
Whether you are checking in on yourself or a loved one, some signs may indicate that someone needs extra support:
Withdrawing from friends, family, or activities they used to enjoy
Talking or writing about death, dying, or feeling like a burden to others
Expressing feelings of hopelessness, being trapped, or having no reason to live
Giving away meaningful possessions or saying goodbye in unusual ways
Sudden calmness or improved mood after a period of depression (can signal a decision has been made)
Increased use of alcohol or substances
Significant changes in sleep patterns, appetite, or daily functioning
If you notice these signs in yourself or someone you care about, take them seriously. You do not have to have the perfect words. Simply being present and saying "I'm here" matters more than you know.
Help Is Available. Recovery Is Possible.
One of the most important things to hold onto is this: things can get better. With the right support, people experiencing even the darkest moments can find their way back to hope and connection. You are not broken. You are not beyond help. And you do not have to figure this out alone.
